MIND THE GAP - BAZAAR IN TRONDHEIM
Designed by: Audun Hellemo
The site for the Bazaar is one of Trondheim's finest; close to the city centre and right by the canal and the fjord. However; today in a completely dead area filled by infrastucture. The project is based on the winning entry for a competetion held in 1997, "The city meets the water", where the two main areas north west and north east of the existing rail tracks are developed into a city beach and a new, large housing area. The site is the crossing point between a movement between the city centre, the beach, the new housing area and the fjord. The movement lines are filled with program - a bazaar with restaurant, infocenter and exhibition space - which makes the gap and the in-between an interesting place to be on your way from one place to the other. A huge concrete structure folds from the canal to the fjord creating a continous space under and between the railtracks. The bazaar offers a wide range of spatial experiences, from the narrow and noisy 'bazaarstreet' to the huge, open and light marketplace. The folding creates a dynamic space which unfolds itself as you move around the system, new areas and openings are visible from different views and positions - thus leaving the traditional mall, going to the exotic and exciting bazaar.

Kjeld: "You didn't use our competition entry. But that's OK."
