Townplanning at Ranheim
Designed by: Ivar Lyngner, Torger Wendelbo, Hedvig Øberg and Audun Hellemo
The basic course in townplanning is redefining a suburban area outside Trondheim, called Ranheim. With a former identity connected to the old paper factory, the place is today completely dependent on Trondheim's existance, with housing areas scattered around the factory area and two barriers, the main road from Trondheim and the train, dividing the spatial orientation. We don't believe Ranheim ever will be able to compete with Trondheim's urban qualities, and have rather looked at those qualities not evident in Trondheim; vegetation and openness to the fjord. We have organised the public institutions such as a new school, library, swimming hall and a new train station along the river, which once played an important role. The public institutions are situated in walking distance from each other in a green belt that takes back the area's original spatial direction. The pedestrian road offers a variety of spatial and programmatic experiences and makes it a natural and exciting choice compared to driving by car. The car is left at home.
