MUSEUM FOR JAPANESE ART AND DESIGN
Designed by: Audun Hellemo
The main title for the assignment was "Building whithin an urban context", and the site is a small parking lot downtown Trondheim. My concept was to design the museum as a walk through Japanese history with two seperate floors symbolizing before and after 1868 - ground floor with small rooms, little daylight, old art; first floor with one large room, much daylight and modern art and industrial design. To mark this difference even more, the storeys are displaced, seen as breaks in the faces, the light well and in one wall. One big volume for temporary exhibitions penetrates the two floors, keeping them together. The face of this volume has inspiration from Japanese scrolls.
Teacher's comment:
Anne Lise: "The shifting of the storeys exists only in your head."
